4-Day Desert Itinerary: Marrakech to the Great Dunes of Erg Chigaga
Our journey begins with a dramatic climb over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass ($2,260$m). We stop to explore the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a famous backdrop for Hollywood films. After crossing the Anti-Atlas, we descend into the lush Draa Valley, arriving in the palm groves of Agdz for our first night in a traditional Riad. Highlight: Walking through the ancient earthen streets of Ait Ben Haddou. Total Driving: Approximately $6$–$7$ hours.
We follow the Draa River south, passing through millions of date palms and fortified Kasbahs. We stop in Zagora for a break before reaching Tamegroute, where you can visit the famous green pottery workshops and the ancient Koranic library. The road ends in M’Hamid, the gateway to the deep Sahara, where we spend the night in a guesthouse at the edge of the wilderness. Highlight: Discovering the 11th-century manuscripts in Tamegroute. Today the real adventure begins as we trade the pavement for a 4x4 off-road expedition. We traverse the varied desert landscapes of "Hamada" (stone desert) and visit the Sacred Oasis. By afternoon, we reach the towering peaks of Erg Chigaga, the largest sand sea in Morocco. The Experience: Enjoy a camel trek at sunset, followed by a traditional dinner and live nomadic music under a canopy of stars at our desert camp. Total Driving: Approximately $3$ hours (Off-road).
Wake up early for a sunrise over the dunes before we depart via the "Old Paris-Dakar" route. We cross the vast, flat expanse of Lake Iriqui and the rugged landscapes of Foum Zguid. After a lunch stop in the carpet-weaving village of Taznakht, we head back over the mountains, arriving in Marrakech by early evening. Highlight: Speeding across the dried-up salt flats of Lake Iriqui. Total Driving: Approximately $8$–$9$ hours.
